Keratin (KRT) 19 is a poor prognostic marker for HCC. The study showed that hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) from hepatic stellate cells activates c-MET and the MEK-ERK1/2 pathway and in turn AP1 (JUN/FOSL1) and SP1, further inducing KRT19 expression in HCC cells. These findings highlight that KRT19 expression in HCC is regulated by crosstalk between cancer-associated fibroblasts and HCC cells, revealing potential therapeutic targets for this aggressive disease.
